News - Finland’s first two gold medals

The first day of the taekwondo competition, we witnessed the poomsae competition, and we got the first champions of the European Universities Games. In the recognized form, poomsaea, Frans Salmi from the University of Turku, from Finland, won first place, Diogo Ramalho from Portugal came second, while third place was shared by Joao Moreira from the Catholic University of Portugal, and Victor Francey from the University of Fribourg.

In the women’s competition, Gabriela Martins from Romania won the gold, Joana Lourenco the silver, while Tatiana Costal and Nicole Huemer from Innsbruck left with the bronze.

In the free poomsae form, Frans Salmi took the 1st place once more, while Miloš Petković from the University of Novi Sad came second. In the women’s category, Joana Lourenco from Lisbon snagged the gold without significant effort.

Diogo Ramalho, a student from Portugal, explained to us that forms require strength and concentration. It appears extremely simple, but it takes months and years of practice. Doing poomsae, that is, the forms, is like fighting shadows. Everything needs to be perfect and balanced, which often leads to serious joint and muscle injuries. You need to be calm, stable, and do all forms with respect, explained Diogo Ramalho.
