News - Mario Santos: Coimbra already started preparing for 2018 Games

The European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 206 are slowly coming to an end, but in two years’ time student athletes will have a new opportunity to get together and measure their skills at the fourth European Universities Games in Coimbra in Portugal.

Coimbra is a city famous for its knowledge and its University, one of the oldest universities in the world, was founded in 1290.

Mario Santos, Secretary General of the Organizing Committee of the European Universities Games Coimbra 2018, has visited this year’s Games to present the next host of the Games to students, volunteers and anyone interested.

“Coimbra has a long and important history, it has been a guardian of the Portuguese language and knowledge for more than six hundred years. It is known as the city of universities and students and we wish that visitors and contestants experience Coimbra itself,” started Mario Santos.

“The Games in Zagreb and Rijeka are a great experience and many of the things we experienced here will help us to prepare for the new Games.”

Coimbra has already started renovating its infrastructure in preparation for the Games. All interested for volunteering at the Games in Coimbra will be able to apply starting next year. Volunteers will be needed as early as 2017 as Coimbra will host European championships in judo, taekwondo and karate.

The closing ceremony of the third European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka is to be held on Monday, July 25, when the story of the Games in Croatia will officially come to an end.
