News - Russians dominate the second round of chess

Kovanova Baira and Travkina Anastasia from Russia, who represent the Ural State Mining University, as well as Ivona Purgar from Croatia, student at the University of Zagreb, have each collected two points in the women’s competition. In the men’s competition, Ponkratov Pavel and Chigaev Maksim, from the Ural State Mining University, Miloš Stanković, representing the University of Belgrade, Gabuzyan Hovhannes and Andriasian Zavenkao from the Armenian State Institute of Physics, and Van Der Velden Bram from the Netherlands, representing the University of Cambridge, have two points each.

The first to finish was Matejak Karolina, who collected her first point for the University of Ljubljana, because her opponent had made a mistake, by moving the king and then attempting castling, which was an illegal move.

“She is a very good player, it can happen to anyone,” said Karolina, stressing that she probably would not have noticed if she had not paid attention.
Jorge and Bruno, students from the University of Porto, have announced that they will lose in the second round because their opponents are better ranked than them, and that they hope to end up in the third round with 1 to 1.5 points.
