The Rijeka Torpedo set up at the Campus

Competitions are a priority for athletes participating in the European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016. However, they would like to have some fun as well. As they don’t have much time for sightseeing, the EUG has ensured that at least one tourist attraction comes to the Campus: a torpedo replica was set up by the Info Point.

This torpedo is the reason why Rijeka is famous worldwide. The first ever torpedo was manufactured in Rijeka in 1866 according to the blueprint made by the British Robert Whitehead and Ivan Luppis from Rijeka. The first torpedo was designed to protect the coast from any threats coming from the sea, hence its original name ‘salvacoste’. The city had a torpedo factory for decades, and there is a torpedo launching pad in Rijeka even today.
