News - Quality play marks the first day of table tennis competitions

The first round of both table tennis competitions at the European Universities Games was played today at the Hall of sports. Twenty-six teams divided into eight groups played in the men’s tournament; the team from Nottingham Trent University (UK) had the most successful day, passing the group with two wins. Eighteen teams divided into six groups played in the women’s tournament, with the Russian State University for the Humanities winning 3:0 in both matches of the group phase, making them the best women’s team of the day.

The women’s team from the University of Zagreb had an equally good performance, triumphing over their opponents and progressing to the second round of the competition. After a well-played first round, home player Josipa Zajec commented on her team’s performance: ‘We played really well today, we had easier opponents thanks to the draw, but I believe we won’t stop here and I’m sure we will be one of the contenders for the medals. Of course, it will be difficult because other teams are very strong, but we will do our best to win another medal for our University.’

‘Our teams have shown, in both categories, what we have been working on for the past year and I think we have the potential to reach the very end,’ Neven Karković, coach of the University of Zagreb, briefly commented on the performance of his players.

The group phase of the competition was marked by impressive, but very tense sets brimming with overturns, showing once again why table tennis is such a respected sport among sport connoisseurs. We hope that the next round of the competition, which is played tomorrow, will bring a game and sets of equal quality.
