News - Prime Minister Orešković: European Universities Games are a turning point for Croatian sport

One day before the official opening of the European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016, Croatian Prime Minister, Tihomir Orešković, received the delegation of the Games.

The delegation consisted of, among others, the president of the International University Sports Federation, Oleg Matytsin, the president of the European University Association, Adam Roczek, and the president of the Croatian Academic Sports Association and the European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016 Zrinko Čustonja.

European Universities Games are one of the biggest sports events ever held in Croatia. The Games will be held from July 12 to July 25 in Zagreb and Rijeka. Over 5000 students from over 40 European countries and over 400 universities will compete in 21 sports. Although the competitions start today, the official opening ceremony will be held tomorrow at the Athletics Stadium of Mladost Sports Park. Approximately 850 student athletes will represent Croatia, coming from 16 Croatian universities.

The first European Universities Games were held in Cordoba in 2012, the second in Rotterdam in 2014, and the third edition is held in Zagreb and Rijeka.

In his greeting to the delegation of the European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016, Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković expressed his gratitude to everyone for their contribution in organizing the European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016. He emphasized that this is the biggest sports event ever held in Croatia. “This is a turning point for Croatian sport,” he added. He also expressed his belief that Croatia will be an excellent host, and he wished everyone a lot of success at the upcoming Games.

The president of the Croatian Academic Sports Association and the European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016 Zrinko Čustonja, the president of the International University Sports Federation, Oleg Matytsin, and the president of the European University Association, Adam Roczek, thanked the Prime Minister and all institutions of the Republic of Croatia which helped organize this great sports event.

Tomorrow, as the honorary president of the Organising Committee of the EUG 2016, Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković will officially open the European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016 at the Athletics Stadium of Mladost Sports Park.
