News - Nottingham rowing team: Victory will be a wedding present for our coach

After arriving at the European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016 in Zagreb on Sunday evening, Nottingham Trent University’s men’s rowing team trained very hard this morning.

“We want to win for our coach Ashley who will get married next Thursday. It would be the perfect present for his wedding!”, explains the men’s team of the Nottingham Trent University.

The 2000-meter rowing competition will take place at Jarun Lake venue from Tuesday, July 12 until Thursday, July 14.

When it comes to weather conditions and high temperatures, competition conditions are complicated for most of the students. Quad rower Neil Connel from the University of Durham confirms: “It is very difficult to row in this heat. Nevertheless, we are getting used to it.”

The women’s team of the Saint Petersburg Medical University participates in the European Universities Games for the first time. Farida Almuhmemeteva says: “The most important thing for us is to participate. But of course, we will try to win a medal. We want to be well-prepared for the tournament, so we’ll get some rest tonight.”

Satisfied with the how the Games are organized, Newcastle coach Alex Leigh is thinking about coming back here for the training campus: “The accommodation is fantastic and the lake is lovely.”

As a matter of fact, most of the rowers will leave Zagreb this Friday, July 15. The women’s eight rowing team of Newcastle admits: “We have not seen a lot of Zagreb, but the place seems to be very nice. We would have loved to stay here longer.”

And we hope they will!
