News - Golf: Brits brilliant, Germans in the front

On the second day of golf competitions played at Country Club Zagreb the British players confirmed themselves as favorites in the women’s tournament, and all three teams from the British Isles will most likely win medals. In the men’s tournament, the German players took advantage of the Irish team’s lousy day to reach first place.

In the women’s tournament, Gemma Baty from the University of Stirling is leading her team to the gold medal. She and Sinead Sexton managed to shoot almost even par and are deservedly in the lead in the team competition. Miranda Brain from St. Andrews University has managed to keep the team from her university in second place after a terrific second day. The only ones who could spoil the triple celebration of the Brits are the Germans, but the brilliant Anna-Lena Kramer needs a good play from her teammates.

In the men’s tournament, the situation is much more uncertain, with five teams battling it out for the medals. Still, the results so far indicate that the gold medal will go to the team from Germany. Tim Hubner and Julian Bachmaier are a great tandem, and are keeping the Technical University of Munich in first place. The University of Ulster had a lousy day, and the German players made the most of it and passed them, and tomorrow we will see a real fight between these two universities.

The home crowd is hoping that the team from Zagreb will have the strength and manage to cause problems for the two leading teams on Friday.

They are currently in third place, but one should take into account the home turf and the great play by Ivan Vučemilo, who has been the best individual in the last two days. However, the team from Croatia’s capital need to look out for the University of Stirling and the University of Novi Sad, who might surprise them, both being only a few hits away from third place.

We are in for an exciting day and good golf on the courts of the Country Club Zagreb on Friday.
