News - French and Russian aces successful in lead climbing

After moving to Jankomir from the Zagreb Fair, female and male climbers finished the qualification round in lead climbing.

On the second day of competition in sport climbing at the European Universities Games Zagreb – Rijeka 2016, the contestants moved to Fothia West Sports Hall at Jankomir. Saturday kicked off with qualification rounds in men’s and women’s lead climbing competition. In pursuit of the finals, the most successful in the men’s competition was Dmitrij Fakirianov from Ural Federal University, while his teammate Dmitrij Šaratfudinov finished second.

The team from the University of Ljubljana also had reasons to celebrate, as their Izidor Zupan won third place. Apart from him, another finalist from the Slovenian team is Tim Unuk, who finished fifth. The National Institute of Applied Sciences of Lyon can boast with four female finalists. One of them is Fanny Gibert, who was especially successful in the qualification round, winning first place. Jevgenija Lapšina from the Ural University was second, and Jennifer Wood from the University of Sheffield finished third.

Steve Cox, leader of the Sheffield team, can be satisfied with Wood’s performance, who won bronze in the boulder competition on Friday.

‘We had two finalists yesterday, we have won a medal and a tenth place, and so far we are satisfied with the competition,’ said Cox.
The finals in lead climbing are scheduled for Sunday.
