News - Four teams emerge victorious after the second day of the handball tournament
Group A
The second day of Rijeka’s handball tournament at the European Universities Games Zagreb – Rijeka 2016, the University of Ljubljana suffered a 29-26 defeat against the University of Minho. Miguel Pereira scored by far the most goals during the match, 13 for the Portuguese team, which is certainly one of the main reasons behind Portugal’s victory. This was a second defeat for Ljubljana’s players after they lost to the German University of Cologne in the first round.
Matija Golik, player from the University of Rijeka, scored 11 goals during the match against the German University of Cologne. Despite his outstanding performance, however, the German team won 28-22. The German players were in their element for the entirety of the match, with four of their players scoring 5 or more goals, among whom Justin Muller was the best with 7 goals. The team from Cologne sealed top spot in the group, while Rijeka’s players finished third, with 1 point from a rematch with the University of Minho in the first round.
Group B
The team from the University of Niš was the only one from group B to go undefeated after the second round. With their effective offensive play, the Serbian players lead their team to a 40-23 victory over the University of Aveiro. Nemanja Živković and Mladen Šotić scored the most goals during the match, 10 and 8 respectively. In the Portuguese team, Ulisses Ribeiro scored the impressive 5 goals.
The second match in group B ended in a 37-35 victory for the Romanian Constantin Brâncuși University of Târgu Jiu over the Austrian University of Innsbruck. Since both teams kept scoring, the outcome was uncertain for the entirety of the match. In the Romanian team, Robert Militaru scored by far the most with 13 goals, followed by Dorin Dragnea with 10 and Ionut Nistor with 8 goals. As far as the Austrian team goes, Cristoph Kalchauer scored 10 goals, while his teammates Simon Schledel and Maximilian Schneider scored 7 and 6 goals respectively.
Group C
The players from the VERN’ University of Applied Sciences celebrated their second victory in group C after winning 33-27 against the University of Basel. The students from VERN’ showed outstanding teamwork during the match, and their best player was Kevin Lind with 6 goals, followed closely by Mike Lind and Matej Tabak with 5 goals. Phillip Jutzeler and Lukas Marki from the Swiss team both scored 6 goals, but despite their great performance and their teammate Max Gerbl scoring 5 goals, they did not manage to beat their opponents. VERN’s team is advancing to the third round, where they will face off against the Turkish Yeditepe University, who hold top spot in the group.
The French University of the Littoral Opal Coast celebrated a 24-21 victory over the Turkish Yeditepe University. Both teams advanced to the second round with zero points on their account. Despite great performances by T. Kristopher Manersberdger (7 goals), and Zekican Khran and Ilker Agar (5 goals), the Turkish team did not manage to win. Three players from the French team scored 4 goals, and Antoine Desaegher brought his team closer to victory with 6 goals.
Group D
The students from the University of Zagreb celebrated a 33-19 victory over the University of Cyprus. The players from Cyprus were not able to overcome the stronger team from Zagreb, among whom Filip Vučelić scored the most with 8 goals, followed by Goran Blažević with 6 goals. In the opposing team, Timotheos Minasides and Charalambos Papatryfonos both scored 4 goals.
The second match from group D ended in a 27-24 win for the Lithuanian Sports University victory, and a defeat for the University of Cordoba. Jose M. Padilla Jimenez was the most productive player of the match, scoring a total of 8 goals. Unfortunately, this was still not enough to lift the Spanish team to victory. The Spanish players will face off against the University of Zagreb in the third round, while the Lithuanian team will be facing off against the University of Cyprus.

“Without Hamlet” is an award-winning play that explores what would happen to Hamlet if its protagonist took a day off. Whilst turning the world’s best-known tragedy into a comedy, the performers still pay hommage to the great work by citing its best quotes and putting the work into a modern-day context.
