Handball players from Niš and Cologne play in the men’s finals

Team sports played in Rijeka are slowly coming to an end. Yesterday we learned the names of the semi-finalists, and today we know who will win the two brightest medals in the men’s tournament. The players gave us an exciting tournament with high quality game and many attractive moves. However, the gold medal will either go to the team from the German Sport University Cologne or to the team from the University of Niš. After yesterday’s victory over the University of Zagreb, today Cologne beat another team that comes from the Croatian capital – VERN ‘. The result 28:24 brought Cologne to the finals.

The Niš team, who showed the most dominant and most efficient play throughout the tournament, emerged triumphant from the second semi-final.

Before the semi-finals they won their games with an average 15-goal lead; this is why a lot of goals were expected in match as well. The Portuguese University of Minho didn’t have the strength to stand up to the University of Niš, who won 31:24. After the first half they were in the lead with 15:11, they continued playing safely and brought the game to an end. Diogo Branquinho, Vasco Arieas and Miguel Pereira were the only active players in the team from Minho. The first two scored seven each, and Miguel added five goals. Miloš Lojančić scored seven, while Nemanja Živković, the most efficient Niš player at the tournament, scored six.

The women handball players from Rijeka have a chance to win the gold at the home court

The women’s competition is also coming to an end. The team from Rijeka has the opportunity to win the gold medal in front of their fans, but the team from Lithuania will do their best to stop them.

In the end, Rijeka didn’t how to work as hard as it was expected. The Slovenes were great in the earlier stages of the tournament, but underperformed today. It was a one-sided match for Rijeka, who were carried by the home crowd and went on a half time break with a two goal lead – 13:11. Ljubljana tried to fight back in the second half, but Rijeka was experienced enough to prevent the comeback. Their continued with their great performance to win 28:18.

Nataša Miočinović and Ivona Škorić from the winning team scored six goals, while Kristina Plahinek and Kika Vrkljan added five more. The only inspired Ljubljana player from was Eva Zorko, who scored five goals.

Lithuania completely sunk their opponent, the team from Zagreb. It was expected that the team from Zagreb would have a great performance and fight against the Lithuanians since in front of their home crowd, but things were different on the court. After the first half the score was 16:10 for Lithuania, who stepped up the pace in the second half and won by a 15-goal margin – the result was 34:19.

Klaudia Šidlauskyte led her university with nine goals, while Audinga Knuibiate contributed eight more. Anamarija Galic and Tarra Bezjak from Zagreb each scored five goals.
