News - Fifth day of EUC Football

After a day off, men’s championship started with quarter-finals.

The most visited match of the day was the one between the University of Osijek and the University of Franche-Comte at the auxiliary pitch of FC Osijek. The team from Osijek had a perfect opportunity but did not score. Soon, it negatively affected the hosts and they started playing aggressively. The result was a red card for University of Osijek. The French team made the most of it and took the lead with the score 0:1. They retained the lead until the end of the game and thus qualified for the semi-finals of the European Universities Championship.

The players of the University of Minho and the University of Jyvaskyla confronted each other on the same field in the afternoon match. Both teams played cautiously so there were not big threats to the goals. However, in the last minutes of the match, the Portuguese managed to score a goal (1:0) and thus avoided extra time.

The University of Pamukkale and the University of Bochum played at the FC Olimpija. After a tie in extra time (0:0), the German team showed a better precision in penalties (5:6) and qualified for the semi-finals.

The last quarter-final match was played at the same field in the afternoon. The rivals were the Kuban State University and the University of Constantin Branc. After a tie of 1:1, a penalty shootout gave the winners of the match. The Russian goalkeeper Artem Bondarenk played a key role and led his team to the semi-finals (6:5).

The most interesting encounter of the female competition was the one between Ural Federal University and the University of Montpellier. The Russian players won the French team leaving them with their first defeat. After dominating the first half, the Russians scored two consecutive goals in the second half. Although the French team scored a goal, the match ended with 2:1.

The match between University of Porto and the University of Osijek confirmed the high quality of Portugal’s team, thus leaving local players in an unpleasant series of four defeats. The University of Marburg and the University of Song og Fjordane played the final match of the day. Although the Germans took the lead, the Norwegians have managed to win the match with the final score of 1:3.
