News - Chess: Gabuzyan and Kovanova best at the end of the second day

The chess competition held at Pauk Hall at the Student dormitory Stjepan Radić is in full swing. The competition is fierce; the best chess players have to give their best to beat their skiled opponents. At the end of the second days, the Armenians are ahead in the men’s competiton, while a Russian woman took the lead in the women’s competition.

Five grandmasters are participating in the men’s competition, and after six rounds played the Armenian Hovhannes Gabuzyan is in the lead, winning 5.5 out of 6 possible points. His match against the Croatian competitor Saša Martinović ended in a draw. After his colleague from Armenia had a weak day, Andrissana Zavena found himself alone at the top of the table, while Saša Martinović holds the third place.

In the ladies’ competition, the match between the two best ranked participants ended in a draw. Grandmaster Baira Kovanova ended the day with 5,5 points on her tally, but the two girls from Serbia are at her tail – Adele Velikić with 5 points, and her colleague Jovana Erić with 4,5 points.
