News - Women’s beach volleyball: Attractive play on the first day

GROUP A

The beach volleyball tournament at the European Universities Games kicked off today. All matches will be held at Jarun Lake. In the morning matches of Group A, the women’s team of the University of Zagreb beat the University of Bergen in Norway with 2:0. The Zagreb team won the first set relativley easy, but the Norwegians upped their play in the second and almost equalized. Still, Zagreb kept their composure and took the set with 23:21.

In a tense match between the Technion Israel Institute of Technology and Tampere University of Technology in Finland, the girls from Finland took the win with 2:1. The Israeli team were better in the first set, winning it 21:19, but Tampere Unviersity of Technology managed to pull back from behind and win the second set with 21:15. They continued in the same tempo, taking the third with 15:13.

The University of Zagreb 1 and the University of Bergen both secured wins in the afternoon: the girls from Zagreb proved beat Tampere University of Technology 2:0 (21:7, 21:11). The University of Bergen triumphed over the Technion Israeli Instiute of Technology with 2:0 (21:12, 21:8).

GROUP B

The University of Porto notched a 2:0 win against the University of Physical Education in Budapest. The Portuguese were convincing in both set s– winning 21:12, 21:14.

The Norwegian School of Sport Sciences beat the University of Zagreb 2 with 2:1. Zagreb took the lead by winning the first set 21:17, but couldn’t keep their focus, losing the second set with 21:18 and the third with 15:12.

In the day’s last match of Group B, the Norvegian School of Sport Sciences produced a convincing 2:0 win over the Hungarian University of Physical Education (21:11, 21:7).

GROUP C

The University of Split lost to the University of Warsaw 1 with 0:2 (21:6, 21:12). Toulouse 1 University Capitole beat the University of Cmerino 2:0. The French had a very convincing performance, defeating the Italians with ease (21:6, 21:10).

Later in the day Toulouse 1 University Capitole met with the University of Split. The Split team couldn’t stand up to the French, who won 2:0 (21:13, 21:15).
The University of Warsaw 1 beat the University of Camerino 2:0 (21:12, 21:6).

GROUP D

Riga Stradiņš University from Latvia performed better than the University of Ljubljana. The players from Slovenia lost to the Latvian team 21-15 and 21-13.

The University of Warsaw made their debut at the EUG volleyball tournament with a 2-0 win over the University of Ankara. The Polish team won both sets without much problem, leading them to a 21-9 and a 21-13 victory. After the match, a player from the University of Ankara, Irma, said:

“We didn’t give our best and we lost. We didn’t have a lot of time to train for the match, though I definitely wouldn’t use that as an excuse.”

The Turkish team performed better during their afternoon match with the University of Ljubljana, which they won 2-0 (21-18, 21-16).

Riga Stradiņš University faced off against the University of Warsaw in an intense match to round up the first day. The Latvian team got off to a better start and won the first set 21-16. During the second set, whose outcome was uncertain until the very end, the Polish team regained their strength and managed to win 23-21. After that victory, the Polish team was on the roll and they won the third set 15-7 without problem.

GROUP E

The players from the University of Lorraine faced off against the University of Linz. The French team got off to a great start, which lifted them to a 21-18 win in the first set. During the second set, they were not nearly as good, which secured a 21-10 victory for the Polish team. The University of Linz also won the third set 15-5.

The team from Vilnius University beat the University of Groningen 2-0. They won the first set 21-11 and the second one 21-10.

Lithuanian players defeated the University of Linz in the second match of the day. They won the first set 21-19 and the second one 21-11.

After the defeat of the Austrian team in the morning match, the players from the University of Lorraine beat the players from the Norwegian University of Groningen 2-0. The French team did not falter this time, winning the first set 21-14 and the second one 21-12.
