News - Female referees from basketball finals love Zagreb

I love basketball. I even played it for ten years before becoming a referee. I also graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Business”, said Borka Srdić.

‘I have always loved basketball, and I will continue to do so. I have played basketball for 12 years”, said Romana Rea Nizamić.

On sports competitions, it is the referees that are in charge. Although many think that being a referee in easy, in reality that position is one of the most demanding in the world of sports. The referees are under a lot of pressure because sometimes the fans don’t accept their decisions.

The basketball final between the University of Zagreb and University Alba Iulia held in Dražen Petrović Sports Hall was refereed by two young referees. One from Slovenia, and the other from Austria.

The referee from Slovenia, Borka Srdić, told us for how long she played basketball before becoming a referee and what were her career plans.

‘I think that the girls in the final match played an excellent match and that the best team won. Women’s basketball was on a high level in this tournament. The teams showed what they can do, and the matches for the medals were exceptional. I want to congratulate all teams that participated in the tournament on good matches. The organization of the basketball tournament was great. And I played basketball 10 years before starting my referee career”, said Borka Srdić.

Just like her colleague Borka Srdić, the second referee in the finals, Romana Rea Nizamić, commended the entire organization of the Games.

‘The Games are very well organized. We had a great time and I’ll be sure to come back to Zagreb so I can see more of the city. We stayed at a beautiful hotel. I want to thank the organizers for everything’, said Romana Rea Nizamić.

‘I’ve been a referee for four seasons so far. I love basketball, I love being a referee, and I hope I will continue being one and have another opportunity to referee at such big competition. Such competitions mean a lot to me, just like the experience I get from them’, added Borka Srdić.

‘I’ve been a referee for five seasons, and I’ve learned a lot and have a lot of experience. I’m grateful for the support and advices from our delegates. I had a good time.’

Borka Srdić told us her further career goals.

‘I want to represent my country in different competitions, especially in the competitions organized by the international organization FIBA. I want to be a FIBA referee and get the chance to be a part of various international tournaments and gain experience. And of course, be a referee in in my own country.’

The referee from Austria, Romana Rea Nizamić, also shared with us her career goals.

‘I’m going step by step. I would like to be one of the best judges in the region. But first, my goal is the Bundesliga in Austria and then some international refereeing. I know I will give my best and that I will achieve these goals.’
