News - Passing By in Rijeka: excellent organization, friendly acquaintances – and Hrki

Throughout the European Universities Games, under all weather conditions, at any moment, you can see the hard-working volunteers of the greatest sporting event since the independence of the Republic of Croatia: be it at sports venues or other venues included in the Games, they help all events go according to plan.

Andreja Miler, a school teacher from Rijeka, applied to volunteer at the Games, among other things, because of her experience in one of the sports taking place in Rijeka- taekwondo. When taekwondo tournament starts, she will work as scorer, and now she currently works in the volunteer team.

‘Since I used to volunteer in an organization dedicated to developing cultural activities for specific groups of people, I can say I am satisfied with the organization. I think this event is a positive thing for Rijeka, but for the entire country as well, because all the resources will stay after the Games, so young people will have more possibilities. Apart from the resources, they will help create friendships and build a positive image of Croatia.’

Emil Erić, a student from Osijek, says he chose Rijeka as his first volunteer destination because he was attracted by the sea, seeing it as a great reward for all the exams he had passed at the Faculty of Economics in Osijek.

‘Volunteering has always attracted me, but this year I decided to take the step for the first time. So far, it’s going better than I had expected. I am impressed with the great number of people in the organization and the energy they invest in the organization of the Games. Things that I will surely remember are the mascot Hrki and the parties taking place every night,’ said Emil before taking a picture with Hrki.

Marina Stanko, leader of the volunteer support team, applied to volunteer because of her love for people and the joy of working in a positive environment.
‘So far, the organization cannot get any better than this and I hope that we will all continue to cooperate in a similar way until the end of the Games. We are all very motivated to live up to the praises coming from foreign students. Regarding the Games, I think that we all have the opportunity to make friendly acquaintances which will prove useful in the long run.’
