After winning Group A, Zagreb to play against the other Croatian team in the quarter final
In the last matches of the group phase of the men’s football competition, the University of Bochum notched a confident 3:0 against the University of Jyvasklya, while the University of Zagreb bested Erasmus University Rotterdam with the same score.
‘I’m not pleased with how my team played the first half. We have to be better today, Jyväskylä is a team with a big heart,’ said the Bochum coach Adam Frytz before the match.
In the first time the teams were even as no goals were scored. It Christoph Caspari ten minutes to score in the second half, and the second and the third goal came soon after, scored by Christian Marz and Dennis Wibe.
Jyväskylä was left disappointed as they lost all chances of qualifying to the knockout stage of the competition. The last game of the third of Group A was also played. The University of Zagreb demolished Erasmus University Rotterdam to secure the first place in the group.
The Zagreb team played a great game, and even with their well known fighting spirit the Dutch didn’t pose a threat to the Croatian team.
‘My team deserved the win, I think we’re a good team the we deserved to grasp the first place in our group. I’m satisfied with the game, I think we could have won with a larger margin had we used all our chances. Our goal is to win the tournament and we hope we’ll make it,’ said the coach of Zagreb Tomislav Gričar.
Josip Nimac from the Zagreb team was pleased with his team’s performance.
‘We met our goal, and that goal was to win the group. The most important thing is that we took the game seriously and played as we had previously agreed. Every match requires a serious approach’
‘We should have played better, but I think we played great against the future champion. Zagreb plays very well and it’s hard to play against them. They got some great players and are certainly one of favorites of the tournament,’ said the Rotterdam player Dyllan Visser.
A Croatian duel awaits us in the quarter final as Zagreb will play Osijek.
French team top Group B
In the third round of Group B, the University of Montpellier defeated J.J. Strossmayer University Oijek with 4:1. The French dominated the entire game, as the suggests. Luca Vincent scored two for the French team, while Quentin Gregorio and Aldel Hakin Ajjajji both added one. The only scorer for the team from Osijek was Ivan Peharda.
The match between the University of Klagenfurt and the Unversity of Almeria ended in favor of the Spanish team, who won 2:1. Alvaro Cruz Lago scored twice for the team from Spain, while Marco Koller netted one for the Austrians. The French team tops the Group B with 7 points, Osijek has 3, and Almeria has 2. Klagenfurt is at the bottom of the group with 2 points.
With today’s victories the Spanish and the Romanians secured the top two places in Group C
The University Camilo José Cela won against the Anadolu University 2: 0. The match was held at FC Sesvete Stadium.
The first goal of the match was scored towards the end of the first half when the net of the Turkish goalkeeper was breached by Alvaro Gonzalez Pato. By the end of the game, the fans at FC Sesvete witnessed another Spanish goal scored by Luis Fernandez Calvo who thus ensured the victory for his team.
‘This was a match of high intensity and our players ran a lot. They worked well together and we took all opportunities that presented themselves, “commented the coach of the University Camilo José Cela, Diego Elcoroiribe Gabilondo, after the game.
‘We began the game good, but after one mistake our opponent scored. We tried to score, but we didn’t succeed. Well, we lost the game, and now we can spend more time having fun, ‘said the coach of the Anadolu University.
The players from Anadolu University failed to threaten seriously the Spanish victory. During the match, one of the Turkish players suffered injuries to the hip and ribs, and he needed medical help. Unfortunately he had to go to the hospital.
The second match ended unexpectedly. The Romanians were able to turn around the match against Germany. At half time the result was a draw (1-1), and by the end of the game University Babes-Bolyai scored two more goals (3: 1). The first and only goal for the University of Wurzburg was scored by Nicolas Weisenberger. Darius Alexandru Pop scored two goals and Aurelian Horatiu Popa scored one for the Romanian team.
“Germany is a good team and has great players. The first half was a draw, but then in the second half we scored another two goals. Today we played well, said the players of the Romanian University Babes-Bolyai.
Russian and Portuguese players dominating the group D
Portugal won 3-0 in a match against Norway held in the HAŠK Stadium. The match was intense from the very beginning, with Agostinio Soarez scoring a goal after only two minutes. Soarez also scored the second goal for the Portuguese team in the 23th minute. The team from the Sogn og Fjordane University College are self-trained. Although the Norwegian players officially do have a coach, they got together and trained for the Games all by themselves.
“We’ve had many opportunities to score, but we missed them. We hope to win at least one game before heading back home,” said Frederik Hansen, captain of the Norwegian team.
Michael Ribeiro, coach from the University of Minho, said that he always knew his team was outstanding, and that they were incredibly lucky to score a goal in the first few minutes.
The Kuban State University faced off against the University of Lausanne in the second match of group D. The match ended in a 3-1 win for the Kuban University. The Russian team scored one goal in the first half-time, and the other two after the break. The Swiss players scored their only goal in the 52th minute.
Sergei Gorbachev, coach of the Russian team, said:
‘We loved playing on this field and we are happy with the outcome. Our goal right now is to win.’
‘The Russians play rough and they are physically stronger than us, so it wasn’t easy. However, we are still happy to be here and we are enjoying our stay for as long as we can,’ said the Portuguese player Cedric Ribeiro.
