News - Women’s basketball: G Team beats Split 61:51

The women’s team of the University of Gottingen has beaten the team of the University of Split 61-51 at the opening of the basketball tournament at the European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016 at Trešnjevka Sports Hall.

The start of the game was tight and the Split team played an aggressive field defense, allowing them to score some easy points. On the other hand, it was impossible to defend against the German women in the lane due to their physical superiority. The German team took the first lead in the eighth minute of the first quarter and they kept the lead until the very end. Neither the changes in the lineup nor the changes in the defense could surprise G Team’s attack.

Coach Grgin was not satisfied with the performance of his players.

‘When you score so few points, it is very difficult to expect a victory. We were not precise in outside shots and even free throws. I hope we will be in better shape tomorrow. Our next match is scheduled for 9.00.’

The most prominent name of the University of Gottingen was Bencker, who scored 12 points.

“We played harmoniously and with full intensity, and I think that was the key to our victory today. We still don’t know what to expect from next matches because we don’t know a lot about the opponents, but we will certainly do our best to continue in this rhythm”, said Bencker.

The most efficient player of the University of Split was the team captain Zovko with 12 points, and she was followed by Karadžić with 10 and Puljic with 8 points. Another prominent name along with Bencker was König, who also scored 12 points.
