News - Last climbing medals go to France and Russia, best teams finally known
The competitions in sport climbing at the European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016 finished today, and medals and awards were given to the most successful competitors.
The three-day sport climbing competition at the Games came to an end in the Fothia West Hall in Zagreb. The last day was also the best one for Fanny Gibert from the National Institute for Applied Sciences Lyon and for Dmitrii Fakirianov from the Ural Federal University. Gibert won the gold medal in the women’s lead competition, while Fakirianov was the best in lead in the men’s category.
After the last and successful day of climbing in Zagreb, the lead winner told us she hadn’t been expecting that.
‘I’m overjoyed because I won, especially since this isn’t my main event. Climbing was good and I gave my best,’ said Gibert. She also added that the finals were difficult.
After the competitions finished, medals and awards were given to the most successful competitors. Ural Federal University got the gold medal, the National Institute for Applied Sciences Lyon got the silver medal, mostly due to the success of their female climbers, and the University of Ljubljana won the bronze medal.
Georgij Derkačev from Moscow Aviation Institute was among the winners in the individual tournament. He won the gold medal on the second day in the speed competition.
‘I wasn’t expecting this because I haven’t been training this discipline for some time. I was surprised to see I won the gold medal,’ said Derkačev, who summarized the three-day sport climbing competition in Zagreb.
‘I’m glad I came here. This is only the second time that sport climbing was included in the European Universities Games. The organisation was superb. This is a big competition; everyone gave their best and everything went very well,’ said the Russian climber whose opinion is shared among other competitors.

“Without Hamlet” is an award-winning play that explores what would happen to Hamlet if its protagonist took a day off. Whilst turning the world’s best-known tragedy into a comedy, the performers still pay hommage to the great work by citing its best quotes and putting the work into a modern-day context.
