News - Gold for Rijeka handball women’s team

The University of Rijeka won another gold medal at the European Universities Games. After the male water polo gold this time the brightest medal went to the women’s handball team. They won it after a very unpredictable match against the Lithuanian Sports University. The match was fraught with uncertainty till the very end and it ended with the result 25:24 for Rijeka, even though the players from Lithuania held the lead for most of the game. The game was held in the mostly filled Zamet Hall.

Andrijana Prosenjak, the coach of team from Rijeka said that she was surprised by the success of her team: ‘We had many obstacles, but after every game the girls got better and more successful, which resulted in victory.’

Nataša Miočinović, player for the University of Rijeka, says she hoped for a victory, even though they didn’t start the match with their best game: “The match was difficult, but we managed a reversal at the very end”, Miočinović was pleased.

The players from Lithuania were very disappointed after the defeat and didn’t want to give statements. Their coach, Antanas Skarbalius, said he was surprised by the success of his team, especially of them entering the finals. ‘We were very close to the gold, but I am proud and happy that we’ve came this far,” says Skarbalius. ‘Handball is a very popular sport in Lithuania, but unfortunately in the last 20 years it didn’t have great success at the national level. I hope that these Games and the success of our team will change the situation, especially for women’s handball which isn’t as followed and as popular as the men’s, ‘concluded the Lithuanian coach.
