News - Great atmosphere at rowing finals

Many supporters came to Jarun Lake this Thursday, July 14, to watch the finals on the third and last day of the EUG 2016 rowing competition.

Annika van Putten from the University of Rotterdam (ERA), was the only Dutch athlete who competed in the finals today. “As true Dutch people, we are used to cheeing by cycling along the lake. It is also a Dutch tradition to jump into the water and swim towards the winner´s boat,” told us her teammate with pride. Annika finished fifth the women’s in Single Scull Lightweight competiton.

Dutch coach Wonter confirmed that people would have pleasant memories of the EUG rowing competition: “The competition is well organised and the lake is beautiful. Besides, we saw some great races, which were on a very high level. Some of the crews had already participated in the world championships!”

The University of Nottingham won the women’s competition in quadruple sculls. „I’m so happy I’m on the verge of tears,“ said the mother of one of the athletes, visibly touched.

Even though the Russian athletes from the First Pavlov State University of St. Petersburg had been tired from last night´s opening ceremony, the girls won successfully won the eight women final B: “The best moment of the competition is reaching the finish line. We all just feel happy and relieved,” explained the satisfied the female crew.

On behalf of the European Universities Games Zagreb – Rijeka 2016, we would like to thank all the rowers for their participation and the exciting races.

For practical and financial reasons, most of the athletes will leave tomorrow. So join us at the party tonight to celebrate the rowers one last time before their departure.
