News - Rijeka: A surprise for athletes

In Rijeka, this Wednesday was marked by the final preparations of athletes and volunteers for their trip to Zagreb, where the opening ceremony of the European Universities Games Zagreb – Rijeka 2016 will be held.

After the departure of athletes, some of our hardworking and dedicated volunteers stayed in Rijeka to prepare a surprise for all the participants staying at the Campus. The sculpture named “Kut“ was created by Neven Bilić, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, at the 29th instalment of the Cultural Workshop of Gorski Kotar. The sculpture was donated to the City of Rijeka and placed in the most appropriate location on the Campus.

What is particularly interesting is the fact that Mr. Bilić also worked on the Campus’ design. The sculpture is made of oak billets and consists of two curved surfaces connected with the traditional “swallow’s tail” of Gorski Kotar. The surfaces are each two and a half metres long and the sculpture is two metres and thirty centimetres high.

Although most athletes parted for Zagreb, some of them stayed in the Campus and posed in front of Kut.
