News - Passing by in Zagreb: Duisburg hope for luck, footballers from Valencia will surely remember Opatija

It is the last week of the European Universities Games Zagreb – Rijeka 2016 and many teams are leaving the Student village ‘Stjepan Radić’ happy with the social life provided by their hosts, but even more with the turnout of certain tournaments.

Apart from volunteers, athletes also use the launderette in the athletes’ village to wash their clothes after practice. We met the badminton team from the University of Duisburg in front, who were just putting on clean and dry jerseys.

‘We’ve just picked up our clean clothes from the launderette, we are ready for a new practice and new wins, yesterday against Nottingham and Bern, and who knows who will get lucky and proceed to the quarterfinals today. We haven’t had a chance to visit the center of Zagreb yet, but we’re planning on partying at Roko today, where we have only had coffee so far.’

Walking towards the center of the student complex we ran into the silver medalists from the football team of Valencia, who were saying goodbye to this spectacular event with their luggage in tow.

‘Everything went well in Zagreb, the accommodation was neat and comfortable, and the food was good. We spent our day off visiting the Games in Rijeka, and we also went to Opatija while we were there. If we had to pick, I think we would have to agree that Opatija was the most beautiful destination, we really enjoyed it. We are most proud of the silver medal that we won and that we are taking back to Spain, from the European Championship at that, which was the main reason why we came here!’
