News - Gold Slovene from boulder competition: ‘What can I say? We’re good!’

The team from the University of Ljubljana has already won a gold medal at the sport climbing competition in Zagreb, thanks to Izidor Zupan.

Near the end of the competitions at the European Universities Games Zagreb – Rijeka 2016, the Slovenian climbing enthusiasts are expecting a lot from their competitors from the University of Ljubljana. By winning the gold medal in the men’s boulder competition, Izidor Zupan showed that the expectations were justified, but there wasn’t a lot of time to celebrate or rest.

A day later, Izidor was already in action before noon, and with a final in the lead, it doesn’t come as a surprise that he was in a good mood.

‘This is the first time I’ve been in Zagreb for a longer period and that I’ve stayed in the city, and I like it here,’ said the gold medalist in boulder, who has been climbing for 15 years and is happy with the development of the sport in his homeland.

‘Slovenia is in the very top of world climbing. What can I say? We’re good at this sport!’ Zupan concluded.

Aljaž Kranjc, Izidor’s teammate from the University of Ljubljana, pointed out the quality of the competition in Zagreb. Aljaž was born in Novo Mesto, the Croatian capital is not far from him, and arriving at the Games, he was met with a lot of success-hungry climbers.

‘I wasn’t expecting the competition to be like this considering it’s a university competition. The organization is great, as is the competition itself.’ Kranjc said, noting that he was pleasantly surprised by everything he had experienced in Zagreb.
